In what many observers have described as a bold and strategic move, seasoned grassroots politician Oluyedun “Tunde” Bello has officially declared his intention to contest for the Chairmanship position of Ibadan South West Local Government.
Bello’s political journey is one deeply rooted in years of consistent engagement, loyalty to party structures, and hands-on administrative experience. His early political footprint dates back to 1997 when he contested as a councillorship aspirant under the U.N.C.P, and subsequently emerged as a candidate in the December 5, 1998 elections. These formative years, according to close associates, laid the foundation for his enduring commitment to grassroots development.
Over the years, Bello has built a reputation for dedication and service. Between 2000 and 2003, he served as a revenue collector in Ibadan South West Local Government, gaining firsthand experience in the financial workings of local administration. His capacity for leadership and organization also saw him serve as Personal Assistant to the Majority Leader of the House of Assembly, as well as Personal Protocol Officer to the current Executive Chairman of the local government.
Currently, Bello holds the position of Supervisor for Infrastructure, a role that has further strengthened his understanding of developmental needs within the local government, particularly in areas of road networks, public facilities, and urban planning.
His political résumé also reflects strong party involvement across different eras. He has served as Acting Secretary of U.N.C.P, Youth Leader of A.P.P, and Factional Youth Leader of P.D.P, among other roles. Notably, he was Special Assistant to the Executive Chairman of Ibadan South West Local Government between 2008 and 2011, and also functioned as Youth Leader across the 11 Local Governments in Ibadan. Additionally, he served as Acting Assistant Secretary of the P.D.P in Ibadan South West Local Government during the same period.
Political analysts within Ibadan South West describe Bello as a “tested grassroots mobilizer” whose experience cuts across administration, party structure, and community engagement.
Speaking on his ambition, Bello emphasized continuity and development. He expressed his desire to build on the achievements of the current chairman, Kehinde Akande, while aligning his vision with the developmental strides of Seyi Makinde.
“I am seeking to serve the good people of Ibadan South West with sincerity, experience, and a clear vision. My goal is to consolidate on existing progress while introducing impactful initiatives that will improve infrastructure, boost revenue generation, and ensure quality service delivery,” Bello stated.
He further noted that his administration, if elected, would prioritize people-oriented policies, transparency, and inclusive governance.
Residents and party stakeholders who spoke to Benny News Hub expressed optimism about his candidacy, citing his long-standing involvement in local politics and his understanding of the needs of the people.
As the race for the Ibadan South West chairmanship begins to gather momentum, Bello’s declaration adds a significant voice to what is expected to be a keenly contested political landscape.
