The Nigeria Police Force has announced that it will resume the enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit policy nationwide from January 2, 2026, citing growing security concerns and the need to curb criminal activities linked to the use of unauthorised tinted vehicle glasses.
In a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the Police clarified that there was never a court order restraining the Force from enforcing existing laws regulating tinted vehicle glasses. However, enforcement was temporarily suspended to give motorists sufficient time to regularise their documentation and complete the permit application process without undue pressure.
According to the Police, recent security assessments revealed an alarming increase in crimes carried out using vehicles fitted with illegally tinted glasses. Criminals have reportedly exploited such vehicles to conceal their identities while committing offences including armed robbery, kidnapping, and other violent crimes.
The Force stated that the decision to resume enforcement became necessary as part of proactive measures to enhance public safety and strengthen internal security across the country.
Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, assured Nigerians that the renewed enforcement would be conducted with professionalism, respect for human rights, and strict adherence to the law. He emphasized the Police Force’s commitment to balancing security enforcement with civility and cooperation from the public.
Motorists who require tinted glass permits have been advised to apply through officially approved channels and ensure their vehicles meet legal requirements ahead of the January 2026 deadline.
The Police further urged members of the public to cooperate with officers during enforcement, stressing that compliance would contribute significantly to reducing crime and improving safety nationwide.
