A fierce debate has erupted over the planned #FreeNnamdiKanu protest, with some voices claiming it has drifted far from its stated aim of liberating the Southeast leader and now serves a deeper political purpose. Dr. Onwuasoanya FCC Jones calls the campaign an opportunistic movement pretending to demand justice, but in fact targeting the current government for toppling.
He points to activist Omoyele Sowore and former presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar as key architects behind the protest who, he alleges, are exploiting the cause of Nnamdi Kanu — currently on trial for terrorism — to advance a political agenda.
> “We are not driving this campaign for regime change disguised as a free-Kanu movement,” Dr. Jones writes. “And the Igbo people will not be used as scapegoats.”
The controversy comes amid divided opinions over the protest’s real purpose. While some segments of the Igbo community and parts of southeastern leadership back the demonstration as an issue of justice and marginalisation, other voices caution that the protest might be hijacked by political interests.
Analysts warn that if the protest shifts from lawful advocacy toward destabilisation, it risks undermining the very rights it claims to defend.
