Episode 1: Sharafadeen Alli — The Long Road to Agodi

There are political ambitions, and then there are political journeys that have been years in the making.
For Senator Sharafadeen Abiodun Alli, the road to Agodi Government House is certainly not a journey that began in 2026.
Long before he became the senator representing Oyo South, Alli had already spent decades moving through the political and public-service landscape of Oyo State. From local government administration to the Oyo State Government House, from Odu’a Investment Company to the National Assembly, his political story has passed through several important chapters.
Now, at 63, the Ibadan-born lawyer and politician is once again asking Oyo voters to entrust him with the state's highest political office.
And this time, the journey has taken him further than an aspiration.
He is the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the 2027 Oyo governorship election.
From Ibadan North to the State Government House
Alli's political career did not begin from the Senate.
Between 1991 and 1993, he served as the first elected Executive Chairman of Ibadan North Local Government, giving him an early taste of grassroots administration.
His political journey would later take him into the state government, where he served as Secretary to the Oyo State Government under Governor Rashidi Ladoja and subsequently as Chief of Staff.
He also chaired Odu'a Investment Company Limited, adding a corporate management chapter to a career that had already moved between politics and public administration.
That combination is one of the interesting things about Alli's profile.
He is not coming into the governorship race solely as a career politician. His résumé cuts across law, local government, state administration, corporate leadership and legislative politics.
Then Came the Senate
In 2023, Alli won the Oyo South Senatorial seat on the platform of the APC and entered the 10th National Assembly. He currently serves as chairman of the Senate Committee on Agricultural Colleges and Institutions.
His Senate experience has now become one of the major pillars of his argument for the governorship.
But there is another important point.
Alli has been around Oyo politics for a very long time.
That means he understands the personalities, the alliances, the fault lines and, perhaps most importantly, the peculiar political calculations that can make or break an ambition in Oyo State.
Why Agodi?
When Alli formally declared his governorship ambition in April 2026, he presented the ambition as one driven by a desire for purposeful leadership, development and inclusive governance. The declaration followed consultations with political leaders, traditional rulers and other stakeholders across the state.

But politics is rarely about ambition alone.
It is about structure.
It is about relationships.
It is about whether the candidate can translate personal popularity into votes and whether the political machinery behind him can work beyond the walls of Ibadan.
And that is where the 2027 contest becomes particularly interesting.
The APC Ticket
Alli eventually emerged from a crowded APC field that included notable politicians such as former Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu, former Deputy Governor Rauf Olaniyan, Barrister Akeem Agbaje and others.
The APC subsequently unveiled Alli as its governorship candidate and named Adesoji Adedeji as his running mate.
So, unlike the period when several APC politicians were positioning themselves for the ticket, Alli now has one major hurdle behind him:
He has the party's ticket.
The bigger battle is ahead.
But Can He Carry the Party Along?
This is perhaps one of the most important questions surrounding Alli's candidacy.
The APC's governorship contest was not without tension. Some aspirants and party stakeholders raised concerns about the nomination process, and calls for reconciliation have continued. Recent reports indicate that some APC governorship aspirants have rejected aspects of the reconciliation efforts.
For Alli, therefore, securing the ticket may have been the first victory.
Uniting the house could be the next one.
Because elections are not won by candidates alone.
They are won by people who believe enough in the candidate to knock on doors, attend meetings, mobilise voters and defend the campaign when the candidate is not in the room.
That makes reconciliation within the APC more than an internal party matter. It could become an important part of Alli's journey to Agodi.
What Does Alli Bring?
Experience is perhaps his biggest selling point.
He has operated at the local government level.
He has worked inside the Oyo State Government.
He has headed a major regional investment organisation.
He has served in the Senate.
And now he carries the ticket of one of Nigeria's major political parties.
That is a long political résumé.
But elections have a way of reducing impressive résumés to one simple question:
Can you win?
The Alli Factor
There is also something else worth watching.
Alli is not an entirely new face being introduced to Oyo voters. His political history gives voters something to assess beyond campaign promises. They can look at the offices he has occupied, the decisions he has made and the relationships he has built over the years.
That can be an advantage.
It can also be a burden.
When you have been in public life for decades, your record becomes part of your campaign — whether you advertise it or not.
And that is why the 2027 race will be particularly interesting for him.
Five Men. One Seat.
Senator Sharafadeen Alli has travelled a considerable distance to get here.
But the real journey to Agodi is only beginning.
He has secured the APC ticket. He has a long political history. He has legislative experience and an established presence in Oyo politics.
Now comes the harder question:
Can Sharafadeen Alli turn all of that experience, structure and political history into the mandate required to become the next Governor of Oyo State?
That is the question Oyo voters will ultimately answer.
