Kano, Nigeria — October 10, 2025:
The Court of Appeal, Kano Division, has announced that it will soon deliver judgment on the appeal case of Abdulmalik Tanko and Hashim Isiyaku, two men sentenced to death by the Kano State High Court 5 in 2022 over a case of premeditated murder.
The appeal hearing took place at the Audu Bako Secretariat, where the defence counsel, Barrister Eze Wike, urged the appellate court to overturn the earlier judgment, arguing that the trial process did not establish sufficient evidence to justify a death sentence.
On the other hand, the prosecution counsel, Barrister Lamido Abba Sorondinki, who represented the Kano State Government, maintained that the lower court’s decision was sound and should be upheld in full.
The appeal was presided over by a three-member panel of Justices — Moses Ugo, O. O. Goodluck, and A. R. Mohammed. After listening to both sides, the panel announced that the date for the final judgment would be communicated at a later time.
Legal observers say the upcoming verdict will attract nationwide attention, given the sensitivity surrounding death penalty cases in Nigeria.
