buja, Nigeria — October 11, 2025:
The National Council of State has given its approval to the nomination of Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, SAN, as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The decision followed a presentation by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who formally introduced Professor Amupitan as his nominee to fill the vacant position left by Professor Mahmood Yakubu, whose 10-year tenure ended earlier this month.
In a statement released by the President’s Special Assistant on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu described Amupitan as a man of integrity and professionalism, noting that he is the first person from Kogi State to be nominated for the position.
Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo of Kogi reportedly praised the choice, saying Amupitan’s appointment reflects a commitment to fairness and regional inclusion.
Following the Council’s endorsement, the President is expected to forward the nominee’s name to the Senate for confirmation, in accordance with constitutional provisions.
Born on April 25, 1967, Professor Amupitan hails from Ayetoro Gbede in Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State. He is a distinguished Professor of Law at the University of Jos, where he currently serves as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration).
A Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) since 2014, Amupitan is widely respected in legal and academic circles for his expertise in Company Law, Evidence, Corporate Governance, and Privatization Law.
He has served in several leadership roles, including Dean of the Faculty of Law, Chairman of the Committee of Deans and Directors, and Head of Public Law at the University of Jos. Outside academia, he sits on the boards of multiple organizations and is the Pro-Chancellor of Joseph Ayo Babalola University in Osun State.
The new INEC Chairman-designate is expected to bring decades of legal and administrative experience to the electoral body, which is currently being led in acting capacity by May Agbamuche-Mbu, the oldest-serving national commissioner.
